Tauck Launches Grand India 2006

Grand Tour Highlights Key Sites In Rajasthan And Kerala

NORWALK, CT (May 2, 2005) Tauck World Discovery, the premier name in upscale, escorted travel, will launch its “A Portrait Of India” grand tour (18 days, from $7,690) in 2006. The new journey brings Tauck’s signature, award-winning style of travel and “insider access” to Rajasthan and the Golden Triangle in the north and tropical Kerala in the south.

India is a perfect destination for Tauck and its 80-years of travel expertise, according to company President Robin Tauck. “India is a highly desired, complex destination. The country covers over one million square miles, it’s home to more than a billion people speaking more than 20 languages and 844 dialects, and its culture dates back to 2800 BC,” said Tauck. “On your own, without the assistance of a trusted tour company, it can be overwhelming. We’re proud to have a unique, grand experience filled with special cultural experiences. Every detail is included.”

Working with India’s most established hospitality company, Tauck has spent more than two years developing its new journey, and Robin Tauck personally spent a month in India helping to put the finishing touches on the itinerary. Each departure will be accompanied by an experienced Tauck Director to handle all day-to-day travel needs, and local experts have been enlisted to provide guests with true insider access.

Tauck's "Insider" Experiences
Tauck has crafted a host of “insider” experiences for its guests, such as an unforgettable spiritual dinner near the Raja Ghat along the Ganges river in Varanasi, a houseboat cruise through the palm-fringed canals of Kerala, and a special performance of a 400-year-old classical dance-drama by the world-renowned Kathakali Dancers. Tauck guests will also visit palaces, museums, temples, tombs and even private homes, as well as six UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In addition, they’ll experience a sunrise river cruise on the Ganges, a rickshaw ride through the labyrinthine streets of Old Delhi and an elephant ride en route to the Amber Fort in Jaipur.

Tauck guests will also enjoy lavish accommodations throughout their trip, including a stay at the Oberoi Amarvilas in Agra, where their rooms will overlook the Taj Mahal. Guests will also stay at the Oberoi Udaivilas, set on thirty lakefront acres in Udaipur, and the Rambagh Palace, a former residence of the Maharajah of Jaipur. Other hotels on the itinerary include the luxurious Imperial in the heart of New Delhi, and the 100-year-old Taj Mahal Palace & Tower in Mumbai which artfully blends Moorish, Oriental and Florentine styles.

Tauck has crafted a well-paced itinerary with multiple-night stays in each city, with the exception of a single night stay in Varanasi, and six internal flights make travel between cities quick and easy.

The Historic North and Exotic South
The tour begins with a three-night stay in Delhi, and then continues to the spiritual center of Hindi India – Varanasi, where guests will experience the sacred Ganges River during a mystical early morning boat ride. From Varanasi, guests proceed to Agra for a two-night stay overlooking the stunning Taj Mahal. Here Tauck guests will enjoy a visit to this most famous of India’s architectural wonders during a memorable sunrise tour, and have the opportunity to visit again when the Taj Mahal is awash in the soft light of the setting sun.

The journey next proceeds to Jaipur for a leisurely three-night stay with a visit to the Keoladeo Ghana National Park along the way, and an unforgettable private dinner at the magnificent City Palace. Following Jaipur, it’s on to ancient Udaipur, where guests will enjoy a relaxing cruise on Lake Pichola, the 18th century fountain gardens of Saheliyon ki Bari, the Jagdish Mandir Temple, and the luxurious amenities of the Oberoi Udaivilas.

Guests then fly to Cochin in the enchanting state of Kerala for five relaxing nights in India’s exotic, tropical south. Here guests will experience a cooking demonstration and dinner in the home of an acclaimed Kerala chef. The following day includes a visit to the oldest European settlement in India at Fort Cochin, and a stunning sunset cruise on the Arabian Sea. Guests next enjoy discovering the canals of Kerala, cruising on unique houseboats before arriving at the Lake Kumarakom Resort and a full of day of leisure.

Then it’s on to Mumbai (Bombay) and a visit to the triumphal Gates of India, plus a cruise to see the cave temples and statuary on Elephanta Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Tauck is offering seven departures in early 2006 (Jan. 9 & 30, Feb. 6, 20 & 27, and March 13 & 20), and six in the fall of 2006 (Oct. 2 & 23, Nov. 13 & 20, and Dec. 4 & 11). Prices begin at $7,690 per person (double occupancy), and do not include roundtrip airfare to India or six intra-tour flights (from $990 per person).
